North American B-25 “Mitchell” World War II Medium Bomber, Pikes Peak Airshow, August 9, 2014
A legendary B-25, made famous by the daring 1942 Doolittle Raid, launched from the aircraft carrier “Hornet,” is represented in this photograph by one of the few remaining airworthy examples. Maintained and stored at the National Museum of WWII Aviation in Colorado Springs, any visitor lucky enough to see this particular B-25 up close will marvel at the fact that sixteen of these aircraft managed to take off from a warship a fifth of the tonnage of a modern day Nimitz class aircraft carrier to execute a daring mission against all odds. Of the 10,000 B-25’s built in WWII, fewer than twenty-five remain airworthy.
In alternate years, the Pikes Peak Airshow offers an unparalleled opportunity to see numerous perfectly maintained WWII aircraft perform in the air. Taken with a Nikon D2HS DSLR fitted with a Nikkor 50-300mm f4.5 EDIF manual focus lens zoomed to 300mm, this magnificent example of 1940’s American aeronautical engineering is captured with the sun glinting off its wings and a cloud formation complimenting its classic lines.
