Union Pacific (formerly Denver and Rio Grande Western) Railroad Station Street Side Facade, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, 1975
Completed in 1904 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, this iconic railroad station in the heart of Glenwood Springs, Colorado stands as arguably the only serious architecturally significant competitor to the famed Hotel Colorado, which sits opposite this site on the north side of the Colorado River.
The station’s appearance is characterized by its intricately detailed red brick masonry towers, clay tiled roof and countless other classical enhancements, many crafted of detailed woodwork. There are multiple influential classical styles that blend together in this structure, offering a serious student of architecture much to assess and trace back to earlier periods.
The image here was composed to isolate the purest elements of this building from its visually cluttered surroundings. Late winter afternoon raking light accentuates texture and form so important to understand and appreciate in the design of this unique structure.
Because a fixed back Hasselblad Superwide camera equipped with the famed 38mm f4.5 Carl Zeiss Biogon lens had to be pointed upward for this photograph, distracting vertical line convergence occurred that required digital correction in Photoshop. As a result prints from this image will be from a high resolution digital scan of the original negative.
For years after this image was made on Kodak film, the convergence in the original negatives made this and other images taken at the same time seem unusable. With the advent of Photoshop, the attainment of long-needed vertical line parallelism was finally attained. Present day trees across the street from this scene have now grown so large that this uncluttered view is no longer possible.
Fine art prints of this, landscapes, and other subjects of general interest are available for purchase at coloradoinblackandwhite.com.
