Completed in 1904 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, this iconic railroad station in the heart of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, stands as arguably the only serious architecturally significant competitor to the famed Hotel Colorado, which sits opposite this site on the north side of the Colorado River.

The station’s street side appearance is characterized by its intricately detailed red brick masonry towers, clay tiled roof and countless other classical enhancements, many crafted of detailed woodwork. There are multiple influential classical styles that blend together in this structure, offering a serious student of architecture much to assess and trace back to earlier periods.

The image here was composed to illustrate the important relationship between the south and north facades of this iconic structure, built on a sloping grade from the high street level to the lower track level.  This was a challenging site on which to build any structure more than one hundred twenty years ago, much less a railroad station with requirements to efficiently and safely move passengers, baggage and railway freight without benefit of escalators or elevators.  Late summer afternoon light accentuates the major elements of the building, especially the pyramidally shaped tower roofs on the upper street side of the building.

This view of the northern track side of the structure receives direct sunlight only between May and August each year. The photograph was made just three days before the summer solstice when the sun is furthest north in the sky during the entire year.

This photograph was made with a Nikon D1x DSLR equipped with a Sigma 12-24mm f4-5.6 zoom lens at 20mm focal length.
