Along with the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge and Pool, the Hotel Colorado drives much of the tourist activity in Glenwood Springs.  Built by Walter Devereaux in the late 1890’s as a summer only resort hotel without heating, this structure was used by the US Navy in WWII as a hospital and sanitorium.  Heating was added at that time.  After the war and through many owners and remodels since, the hotel remains a cherished gathering place for weddings and civic events in this mountain community.  Before the completion of US Hi Way 6 in the 1930’s, most tourists arrived and departed by train just across the Colorado river at the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway Station.  With the completion in 1992 of Interstate 70 with its myriad engineering challenges through Glenwood Canyon to the east, it is now far easier for visitors to arrive from Denver than it was a hundred twenty-five years ago.  This photograph made forty years ago was a challenge.  There was not yet any drone photography.  A helicopter was too unstable and expensive for a photograph this close to the ground with the need for perfect perspective correction.  The solution was the use of the Glenwood Springs Fire Department snorkel truck and its small platform at the business end of the snorkel.  There was room only for one person on the platform so it was my task to maneuver over the Hot Springs slide across the street to the vantage point seen in this image.  A 4×5 Calumet Wide Angle View Camera was used in combination with a 75mm f5.6 Schneider Super Angulon Wide Angle Lens to capture this image.  Both Fujichrome color transparency film and Kodak color negative film were exposed.  The posted high resolution digitally scanned image seen here includes the very edges of the film out to the unexposed area under the film guides.  As one can imagine maneuvering high above the ground was not my cup of tea.  A carefully calculated position before going up on the snorkel boom was where I intended to shoot without any further adjustment, and that is how this image came to be.
