My last day of active duty in the US Navy was 3 September 1971.  Before I departed the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), I made two photographs from the bow of my ship to show the busy 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego and the Pacific Fleet ships in port.  Two photographs were required.  In this first image, the three ships tied abreast from the pier outward are USS Towers (DDG-9), USS Lockwood (FF-1064), and USS Parsons (DDG-33).  In the distance is USS Denver (LPD-9).  In the lower right foreground is the fantail of USS Decatur (DDG-31). These ships no longer exist.  Four were sunk as targets, and one was scrapped.  And the ship upon which I was standing to make this image–the USS Blue Ridge?  It is now the flagship of the US Seventh Fleet–the oldest ship still in active service in the United States Navy, (save for the USS Constitution in Boston).  I get chills thinking about the ships and personnel now gone that were so familiar to me more than fifty years ago…  Image made with a Yashica TL Electro-X with a 50mm f1.8 normal lens on Kodachrome film.   A high-resolution digital scan was made of this slide for purposes of printing.
