Redstone, Colorado and the Crystal River, Aerial View, 1973
This image was made fifty-two years ago from the unstable platform of a light plane on a summer day with typical up drafts and rough air. In spite of the stability challenges sharpness and clarity of this image are remarkable–a credit to my Hasselblad medium format camera with its 80mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Planar lens. The Town of Redstone is at left, and Cleveholm Manor, better known as the Redstone Castle, is at upper right. Hiway 133 and the Crystal River run through the center of the image from right to left. Avalanche Creek, the Crystal River’s largest tributary, is seen at lower left. The arc of the well-known coke ovens is visible across Hiway 133 from the entrance road to Redstone. In the ensuing years since this image was made very little has changed, except perhaps the frequent ownership changes of both the Redstone Lodge and the Redstone Castle…stunning period structures that draw tourists to this quaint hamlet for a getaway back in time.
