This English-style early 19th century mansion was built by John Osgood, the founder of CFI (Colorado Fuel and Iron Company–the steel mill in Pueblo). Just south of the originally designed company town of Redstone and across Colorado Hiway 133 from the coke ovens, the manor house represents a bygone era of elegance, wealth and prestige. High grade anthracite coal deposits lie a few miles west of this structure at the Redstone Mine. Coal from the Redstone Mine was the source material for the coke needed for smelting steel at the mill in Pueblo, Colorado, nearly three hundred miles distant. Osgood desired for his employees in Redstone modern company housing with electricity and running water. Eventually this early idea of a verticallyintegrated steel company proved uneconomical because of high costs necessary to transport the coke to Pueblo. Over the decades since, a succession of owners repurposed the mansion for weddings, special events, and as a boutique hotel. High operating expenses and endless repairs proved too much for profitable operations for nearly all of the owners who dared to make the investment in this remote and aging structure. During the winter months, it was rumored more than thirty years ago that propane heating costs alone ran in excess of $2,500 per month! With these kinds of costs and a sparse winter tourist trade, it remains a daunting proposition to operate the Redstone Castle on a profitable basis. This image was made with a medium format Hasselblad 500C using a Carl Zeiss 250mm Sonnar telephoto lens. The original transparency has been scanned at high resolution and extensively retouched to eliminate the powerlines running through the scene. The fountain at right is a frozen shard of ice with only a wisp of water streaming from its top.
