The 4000-foot-long Hanging Lake Tunnels are the crown jewel of the twelve-year-long I-70 construction project through Glenwood Canyon, just east of Glenwood Springs in western Colorado. Comprised of forty bridges and various elevated spans costing 500 million dollars, the completion of this twelve-mile stretch of I-70 along the Colorado River was the final piece of the interstate highway system in Colorado, as originally planned during the Eisenhower Administration in the mid-1950’s. Enormous engineering and environmental challenges defined this project which won wide-spread recognition for its design and construction innovations. The tunnels took a dangerous curve out of the original two-lane US 6 pathway. Image made at dusk one day prior to the tunnels’ dedication using a Hasselblad 500 C with an 80mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Planar Lens and Kodak color negative film. Sodium vapor lighting in the tunnels is vastly different in color temperature than daylight, making accurate color balance impossible to achieve.
