This aircraft was operated by Purdue Airlines, an offshoot of Purdue University, to handle flight operations for this major agriculture, science and engineering institution. Operated until approximately 1971, Purdue Airlines owned four DC-3’s and two four-engine DC-6 aircraft. In addition to carrying passengers, the Purdue Airlines aircraft were used as training planes until the transition to DC-9 jet aircraft. Not only does Purdue offer traditional Aeronautical Engineering degrees through the PhD level, but the university also offers a wide choice of aeronautical engineering technology degrees that emphasize the hands-on aspects of aeronautics. Much of the aeronautical engineering technology training takes place at Purdue’s own airport which also serves the communities of Lafayette and West Lafayette. This image was taken on Kodak film with a Yashica J-5 SLR camera fitted with a 28mm wide angle lens.
