Wilson McCarthy, a prominent attorney and financier from Salt Lake City, Utah, was instrumental in saving the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad from bankruptcy in the 1930’s and 1940’s, modernizing the railroad for heavy traffic in WWII, and finally for being the railroad’s president from 1947 to 1956. The railroad’s business car, seen here on the passenger station side-track in Glenwood Springs in April of 1983 was a modified Pullman-Standard coach built at the railroad’s Burnham Shops in Denver, in 1951. “Wilson McCarthy,” the car’s official road number, is prominently shown, eponymously named for the company president. The car was typically the last one in a passenger or freight consist when executives toured the railroad’s system to observe operations. Forward of the “Wilson McCarthy” in this east-bound Zephyr train in Glenwood Springs is the “Silver Sky” vista dome observation car. The veranda design on “Wilson McCarthy” is similar to those used by political candidates for so-called “whistle stop” campaign speeches going far back into the nineteenth century. The veranda coach design was typically the last car in many passenger consists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Photographed on Kodak color transparency film with a Hasselblad medium format camera using a 60mm f3.5 Carl Zeiss Distagon lens.
