Two aspen leaves in early autumn on the cusp of losing their green-colored chlorophyll as fall approaches. The yellow spots indicate localized loss of chlorophyll, necessary for photosynthesis, signaling the beginning of fall, the changing of the leaves to (mostly) yellow and the inevitable end of life of all aspen leaves each season. Much of this process remains a mystery to botanists…and to photographers attempting to predict where, when, and to what intensity Colorado’s fall colors will occur. Why, for instance, do some aspen leaves turn yellow, orange, orange/red, red, or simply turn brown without ever changing to the bright colors for which they’re famous? There are likely too many factors involved in the annual color change to ever know all the answers. This image was made on Kodak film with a Hasselblad medium format camera using a Carl Zeiss S-Planar 120mm f5.6 lens with an extension tube with to allow close focus. The leaves in this image are more than twice life-size.
