Taken as the title implies at the end of the day and the beginning of nightfall with a Hasselblad Superwide Medium Format Wide Angle Camera equipped with a non-interchangeable 38mm f4.5 Carl Zeiss Biogon lens, the venerable Crystal Mill sits perched on its rocky outcrop on the Crystal River as the aspens change to gold at the height of fall.

Of the millions of images taken at this photographers’ mecca, many fail to convey the mystery and aura of this special place and its wild, untamed environs.

The mill appears as if it has always somehow been on this spot, when, in fact, it has only existed since 1892–just 132 years. Many, but certainly not all, wooden mining structures in Colorado have collapsed due to the ravages of time and the elements, but in the case of this iconic mill built to compress air for mining operations, it has been preserved and restored many times.

It is on the National Register of Historic Places…for obvious reasons.

Located on private land on the opposite side of the Crystal River from the Gunnison County Road which passes by, many have literally overstepped their bounds when visiting, making present day access to this site limited.

As a frequent visitor since 1971, I have, in fact, never found a better view of the mill than the one from this spot just a few feet from the road.

As the name of the Hasselblad camera mentioned above suggests, this image was made with a very wide angle lens, belying the fact that the mill is in a confined area with much less openness than this photograph suggests.

Image made from a high resolution digital scan of the original transparency.
