Tulsa’s second, but tallest skyscraper when completed, is the neo-Gothic-style Philtower Building, dedicated in 1928. Its lobby is easily the most stunning period commercial interior of any structure in this northeastern Oklahoma community. Waite Phillips, brother of the two founders of Phillips Petroleum commissioned and financed this twenty-four-story structure, which, more than any other building in downtown Tulsa, defines the wealth that the oil industry brought to this city. The copper lantern at the roof’s peak along with its colorful tiles is unique and instantly recognizable. Originally an office building, the structure had been converted to lofts in parts of the structure, but current information indicates that the “residential section is closed.” Anyone fortunate enough to inhabit an upper-floor loft in this Tulsa landmark would be treated to grand views of the city to the east, west, and south. Views to the north are obstructed by Tulsa’s tallest buildings. This image was made with a 200mm f3.5 Steinheil Tele-Quinar lens on a Yashica J-5 on Kodak film.
