On this long-abandoned trestle, mining carts once traveled from the Idarado Treasury Mine Tunnel to the Million Dollar Hiway where ore was transported elsewhere for milling and refining. In the distance is one of the three consecutively numbered rust-colored Red Mountain Peaks rising as high as 12,890 feet that gives name to the pass over the Million Dollar highway between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado. Taken in the late afternoon a Nikon F2 was used along with a 35mm f3.5 Perspective Control Nikkor lens on Kodachrome film. The use of this lens prevented convergence of the trestle support frames and allowed a more dynamic composition, eliminating uninteresting foreground. Snow fields intermingle with vibrant red iron-laden patches on the distant peaks. The mine produced small amounts of gold and silver and large amounts of zinc, lead, and copper. Opened in 1939 to provide critically needed metals for WWII defense production, the mine was in operation at the time of this photograph, closing three years later in 1978.
