Horseshoe Bend, immediately east of Glenwood Springs is the beginning of Glenwood Canyon, which stretches eastward for approximately 17 miles. Through Glenwood Canyon in 1983 ran the Colorado River, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (now the Union Pacific Railroad), and US Highway 6. By the end of April, 1983, the Zephyr had made its last run, replaced by Amtrak. In this view taken on Kodak transparency film with a Calumet View Camera and either a 150mm f5.6 or 210mm f5.6 Symmar lens (my records are unclear), the Colorado River flows downstream from left to right while the train is headed upstream from right to left. Construction was well underway on the massive I-70 four-lane project in Glenwood Canyon on the north side of the river, which used nearly all of the US 6 right-of-way. The railroad tracks, constructed in the 19th Century on the south side of the river, were virtually untouched by the highway construction. A lesson learned in my pursuit of Rio Grande Zephyr photographs in the last days of the train’s existence is that neither railroad schedules nor the weather care one iota about photographs. In that long-ago month of April 1983, there was more rain than sunshine and fewer on-time trains than late ones. Neither of these factors discouraged me, as I knew this legendary train was soon to be gone forever.
