All prints are made-to-order and will require one to two weeks’ production time before being shipped. Each order will be acknowledged after payment has been received to confirm the shipping date. To customers who order prints of the same image subsequent to their original order, there may be slight variations in image density and/or contrast when compared to the initial print. If exact matching prints are desired, these should be ordered at the same time.
All prints are shipped flat, durably mounted on high quality backing board with two inch borders top and sides and a five inch border at bottom.
Custom Matting and Framing crafted to fit the Mount Board Size shown will be required to complete the presentation. The bottom border will show below the lower right corner of the image the photographer’s signature. Due to slight size variations please await receipt of your mounted print before ordering custom matting and framing from your local vendor.

The challenge in using large format cameras to photograph moving trains is that most lenses made for these cameras lack sufficiently fast shutter speeds to “freeze” motion. This image demonstrates the fact that precisely following the movement of the observation car’s rearmost portion which moved through a much larger arc, and thus a far higher relative motion, than cars in the front of the train results in sharpness only of the rear portion of the observation car. The remaining portion of the train forward of the observation car is slightly blurred, placing the desired visual emphasis on the classic lines of Silver Sky, the only Rio Grande Zephyr observation car on the railroad’s roster. Sharpness of the front of the train in the distance was sacrificed to gain precise sharpness of the much closer observation car. As the Rio Grande Zephyr headed east to Denver onto the main line and into history in this final month of operation in April of 1983, every photograph I made of the train was one that could not be taken again. On Kodak film, I made this image using a 4×5 Speed Graphic with a 90mmf8.0 Schneider Super Angulon lens.
