Perhaps the most graceful four-engine piston-powered passenger aircraft of the post WWII era, the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation airframe was used by the navy under several different model numbers depending on the aircraft mission. The four engines employed in this aircraft were the Wright R-3350 double row eighteen cylinder 3,400 HP “Turbo-Cyclone” variety, not to be confused with the infamous earlier versions of this engine that caused the loss of more B-29’s than from combat in WWII. The greatly improved engines on this aircraft represented the pinnacle of piston-driven power plant technology, but because of their extreme complexity, were never as reliable as the jet engines on the aircraft that began replacing them in the early 1960’s. Nonetheless, more than 850 Constellations of all varieties–civilian and military–were built, and the aircraft remains legendary due to its elegant lines and distinctive triple tail. In this view from a greater distance than the previously posted image, the uncommon triple tail is in full view. This image was made on an extremely cold day at NAS Millington using a Soligor 28mm f2.8 wide angle lens on a Yashica J-5 SLR employing Kodak transparency film.
