Approaching Storm Front, Conifers, Peru Creek, Colorado, December 26, 2024
Peru Creek, a popular hiking, cross-country skiing, and four-wheel drive trail in Summit County, Colorado, offers awe-inspiring views of stately conifers and distant peaks. In this scene on the day after Christmas in 2024, a grove of fir trees stand together for mutual defense against the inevitable onslaught of Mother Nature. High “washboard” altocumulus clouds approach in tandem with a storm front that will soon transform this pristine afternoon sunlit scene into a monochrome of wind-driven snow. For cross-country skiing treks that demand the lightest possible backpack, Marc Schuman chose a Rolleiwide medium format twin lens reflex camera for this particular day’s outing. The 55mm f4.0 Carl Zeiss Distagon wide angle lens was the perfect choice for these nearby forty foot fir trees, allowing just enough field of view to capture foreground elements all the way to the top most branches and beyond.
