An excellent photograph of what is either a 4-8-2 “Mountain” or a 4-8-4 “Northern” Steam Engine under full steam pulling a long consist of boxcars and gondolas as far as the eye can see demonstrates the advanced development of the railroad industry in the U.S. in the months before this country’s involvement in WWII, already being fought in Europe and the Far East.  After the Pearl Harbor attack, America’s vast railroad infrastructure allowed the rapid movement of war materiel and troops anywhere in the country within a few days.

Because the firebox wheel arrangement under the engine cab is obscured in the photograph, it is not possible to know the precise Whyte wheel classification of this engine.  I’ve not been able to find an engine roster for the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad that would list the engine’s road number and wheel arrangement.  However, knowing the precise date and location of an engine under full steam in the pre-WWII era greatly lends to the history of this image.

Though the negative of this scene is not suitable for dark room printing, I have been able to get an excellent digital scan of it and retouch a few minor imperfections.  Prints will be of excellent quality.

Ernest Robert’s collection of railroad photographs, on loan from his daughter, provides a rare opportunity for rail fans to purchase silver halide photographic prints from many of his large format negatives–some taken by him and others purchased from photographers and collectors. Other collection images requiring digital restoration will yield inkjet prints. Original prints in the collection have been copied digitally under rigorous lighting conditions providing inkjet prints of the highest possible quality.
