Coming Along Side USS New Jersey (BB-62) for an Underway Replenishment, Eastern Pacific Ocean, July, 1969. Every U.S. Navy sailor who goes to sea sooner or later witnesses an Underway Replenishment (UNREP), an evolution no other navy to this day has mastered as well as the U.S. Navy. A miracle of logistics, rigorous procedure, shipboard engineering and design and most of all skilled ship handling, vessels rendezvous a mere 150 to 200 feet apart, steer compensating parallel courses and identical speeds, and transfer personnel, fuel, dry stores, refrigerated stores, ammunition, spare parts, U.S. Mail, and in my time in the navy–movies! Other than flight operations at sea there are few routine evolutions that involve more risk for mishaps and less margin for error than underway replenishment operations. Seen here is the ship in which I served as a midshipman, USS Morton (DD-948), one of the last of the all gun destroyers, coming along side New Jersey for a fuel oil transfer. Morton was a 4200 ton, 418 foot long ship long ago scrapped. New Jersey, still in existence as a museum ship in Camden Yard, New Jersey is a 45,000 ton. 887 foot long battleship of the Iowa class–the largest battleships built for the U.S. Navy before aircraft carriers made 16″ naval guns obsolete. On this particular July day in relatively calm seas, New Jersey appeared as a castle of steel barely heaving or rolling as she made way, while Morton did the opposite to keep up, heaving and rolling, belying her relatively small tonnage, not even ten percent that of New Jersey. To witness New Jersey this close underway is an event no midshipman ever forgets. Certainly, my Rollei 35T 35mm camera, always in my khaki pants pocket, was kept busy recording this once-in-a-lifetime experience on Kodachrome 25 color slide film, perhaps the best color film ever made.
